Art Mediums (Grades 9-12)

Overview

This course is for students who have an interest in the creation of visual art. The focus of this class builds on skill level through an understanding of the various genres within periods of art history.

It is divided into three modes of exploration: 2D, 3D and 4D which consists of an experiential exploration of various processes and techniques as well as an overview of historical and conceptual groundings. As in all our fine and performing arts courses students will be expected to present their work to the public in an exhibit that highlights their talents in the best possible way.

Module 1: 2D—Explorations in Surface
Drawing/ Painting/ Photography

Module 2: 3D—Explorations in Space
Clay/ Found Objects/ Installation

Module 3: 4D—Explorations in Time
Performance/ Sound as Art/ Moving Image

Student Requirements/Expectations

1.  Creative and innovative use of media and approach to subject matter
will be emphasized.
2.  Based on themes of their choice students will research and make
presentations relating art and social contexts.
3.  As part of their professional practice they will develop a portfolio
4.  Behavior – Courtesy, respect and cooperation will be expected from all
students at all times as outlined in the Student Handbook

Attendance – No late work will be accepted other than for an excused absence
Communication with parents – Progress reports will be sent to all approximately four weeks before the end of the quarter. Thereafter, reports will only be issued to students whose grades and effort have significantly changed.

Evaluation will be based on critique of work, projects meeting set criteria, observation, class discussions, formal presentation, individual tutorials, individual discussions
20% – Semester exam
15% – Sketchbook
25% – Body of work & portfolio
15% – Research presentation
10% – Class citizenship
(speaking English, assisting each other, clean up)
15% – Class participation

Grading scale:
100 – 90 = A,  89 – 80 = B,  79 – 70 =C,  69 – 60 = D,  59 – 0 = F
